We meet at The Woodland Community Center on Thursdays at 12 noon, 2003 Cobb Street, Farmville, VA 23901. We also have a Happy Hour Club that meets on Thursdays at 5:30 pm at Three Roads Brewery. Below is a recap of some of our meetings.
August 25, 2022—We look forward to seeing you Thursday at noon at The Woodland or via zoom. Our speaker is District Governor Kenny James and he is coming to visit us! This is a very special visit so please try to show our support and attend. Looking forward to a great meeting!
August 18, 2022—Our speaker is brought to us by Rotarian Anne Tyler Paulek. We are excited to host Juanita Giles, representing VA Children’s Book Festival.
I am also pleased to let you know that the Rotary Community Service Grant committee met and revised the application. It should be up on our website soon and we will be looking for applicants. The deadline to apply will be October 14th so be sure to help spread the word. Very exciting to be able to donate up to $5000!
Also, mark your calendars for 8/25 as our District Governor, Kenny James, will be our featured speaker at the lunch meeting. I am encouraging ALL Happy Hour members to do their best to attend the lunch meeting that day. It is important to have good attendance. He is also an interesting speaker with a good sense of humor, so that is nice!
August 11, 2022—Our speaker is brought to us by Rotarian Andrew Payne. We are excited to host Penny Pairet at noon and Chris Moss at 5:30; both representing the Town of Farmville.
Don’t forget to mark your calendar for 8/25 as our District Governor will be our featured speaker at our lunch meeting. It would be great if everyone from the 5:30pm meeting could try to attend at noon that day.
August 4, 2022—Our speaker is brought to us by Rotarian Justiine Young. We are excited to host Dr. Donkor, representing Ama Nyame Memorial Medical Clinic.
Dr. Donkor was the pulmonologist at Centra-Southside for over 25 years. He saved many, many local lives. He retired in 2018 and returned to his home in Ghana to help his own village where there was no medical care. Some years prior to Dr. Donkor leaving, a fundraising campaign to build a medical clinic in Ghana was formed. With the help of many local donors, we raised a significant amount of money and a number of volunteers from the Farmville area went to Ghana to start the buildings.
Today there is a standing clinic and Dr Donkor is the only physician. His wife is the administrator. They work full time. He is truly practicing jungle medicine without the benefit of modern technology. There is no AC. Patients sometimes die and it may be a day or so before the body is removed. They desperately need a morgue and that is where fundraising efforts lie now. In addition, Dr. Donkor is collecting chewable baby aspirin and multi-vitamins with iron. These medications are desperately needed. PSR is a DROPOFF POINT FOR BOTH MEDICATIONS and CASH donations. Checks should be made payable to the Ama Nyame Memorial Medical Center, Inc.
July 28, 2022—Our speaker is brought to us by Rotarian John Miller. We are excited to host Marty Favret, the Head Football Coach from Hampden-Sydney College.
